Quinolones is a much-researched family of drugs because of its antibiotic properties.The reason for it being shown so much importance is because they have the ability to take on a variety of infections caused by bacteria. Naturally, it has many derivatives of which Levaquin a third generation drug is quite important .Having given the introduction one might still not have understood the uses of the drug which is why a detailed explanation follows this para.
Levaquin (printed as leviquin sometimes by mistake) has the ability to treat bacterial infections affecting sinuses, lungs and so on. It is also a highly regarded drug for pneumonia and anthrax. The basic principle behind the action of the drug is very simple it prevents the unwinding and the duplicating process of the bacteria’s DNA in the human body. To put it in layman language the drug stops the growth of the bacteria.
Though highly beneficial it has a dark side, the drug has the potential to cause dangerous side effects. The most general after effects of the drug is headache,nausea,fever,weakness,pain in the joints and so on. Patients who were administered with Levaquin (also referred as leviquin) also reported tendon ruptures. The drug also increases the sensitivity of the skin hence patients are usually advised to avoid exposure to sunlight. Quite unfortunately, many people fail to identify these symptoms to be side effects and tend to ignore them. These side effects are sometimes mistaken for other medical conditions such as seizure disorder or regular CNS .
Patients from all over the world have been complaining about these side effects for some time but it is only now that they are being acknowledged. The FDA placed a black box warning on the antibiotic on 2008 to warn about its potential side effects. Adding to it booklets describing the risk factors were also asked to be given along with the drug.
