Levaquin has become one of the most controversial drugs of the recent times. The Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals came up with an innovative all-purpose antibiotic in the year 1996. The FDA approved the drug immediately and its popularity has been on steady rise from the time that day. A statistical report shows that its annual sales crossed a whooping 2.3 billion dollars in the year 2005. Known for its ability to cure all the infections caused by bacteria it naturally became the most commonly used antibiotic. It was popular among pharmacists and doctors until its side effects became known, which immediately followed by numerous lawsuits filed against the Ortho McNeil pharmaceuticals.
The FDA was flooded with complaints regarding the side effects of the Levaquin drug most of which was tendon ruptures. Report has it that the patient started developing tendon rupture’s after being placed under the Levaquin treatment for bacterial infections. People began to question has to why a dangerous drug like Levaquin was still in market. In the year, 2008 FDA officially gave an announcement about these side effects and placed the Black box warning on the drug.
So many cases were filed against the company after the announcement that many state and federal courts decided to merge these case together and handle them has a single Lawsuit. Many Law firms are currently taking up the Levaquin tendon case and they don’t charge the victims anything. They take their payment only at the end of the lawsuit and that to only when the victims get their relief.
Levaquin has become such a threat that the CDC has officially removed its recommendations for Levaquin and its family of antibiotics. Medical advicers have discontinued the practice of suggesting the antibiotic. However in United kingdom the drug has been allowed to cure children with cystic fibrosis suffering from lower respiratory infections.
