One of the most commonly used drugs of all time is levaquin a drug from the quinolone antibiotic class. It helps in killing or reducing the bacteria so that the immune system of the body can destroy the pathogen easily. It helps in curing a wide variety of infections resulting from bacteria that successfully resists the immune system of the body. The drug assists the body in fighting against these infections. Levofloxacin is commonly mistaken for the generic version of the levaquin antibiotic but it is actually the generic name of the drug. One must understand that generic name and generic version are two different things.
While under the medication, patients are given many instructions to make sure that the effectiveness of the drug is maintained. It is of prime importance that patients avoid other medications while using the drug at the time of intake. Mineral supplements and antacids usually top the list of the medications that must be avoided. These medications react with Levaquin which results in formation of non-absorbable complexes and increase the chance of toxicity in the body. Caffeine rich drinks like coffee must also be avoided. It is generally advised that the patients take as much fluids as possible. No matter what happens the patient must never miss a dose and if all such a situation arises they must never take it along with the next dose, as it would result in an overdose.
Incase of accidental overdose the patient must seek immediate medical aid as an overdose is a serious issue. In this situation, the patient’s stomach is emptied by giving a suitable drug. One must remember that hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis is not a good choice in this situation as it does not completely remove the Levaquin from the body. A patient must also visit a doctor if he begins to experience inflammation and pain in his muscles as it might be due to Tendon injury triggered by the drug. Though it is quite rare, one must always be aware of the possibilities.
