
Levaquin is an all purpose antibiotic that helps in fighting a variety of bacteria. One must understand that the action of the drug is restricted to bacteria alone and cannot be extended to diseases caused by viruses. It has no effect on viruses therefore one must not use Levaquin for infections caused by viruses . Levaquin comes under the quinolone family of antibiotics and is also known as Levofloxacin which is the generic name of the antibiotic.
Levaquin is available in different strengths and forms in market. The drug can be taken as tablets, oral solution and has IV solutions. The different kinds of strengths of the antibiotic are 250 mg,500mg and 750mg. In an anhydrous form one tablet of 750 mg levaquin contains the following inactive constituents:
Hypromellose,
Crospovidone,
Microcrystalline Cellulose,
Magnesium Stearate,
Polyethylene Glycol,
Titanium Dioxide,
Polysorbate 80 and synthetic red and yellow iron oxides.
The tablet is white in colour and can be consumed in an empty stomach but never in combination with other medications as such action results in decreases of efficiency.
Levaquin has many disadvantages to its credit. A patient undergoing Levaquin drug medication can experience the following symptoms, which amount to allergic reaction: CNS disturbances, tendon ruptures and even increase of toxicity levels in the body. The drug makes the patients prone to developing certain medical conditions known as candida albicans, which happens to be a yeast infection, and C difficile infections.Levaquin antibiotic is known for repressing the natural microflora in the colon which results in C difficile infections. This infection is responsible for the occurring of nosocomial, fluoroquinolone-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis .
Due to the severity of the side effects, the drug is no longer prescribed for patients. Only in rare cases were the benefit ratio is greater then the risks involved the drug is used.
